Braveheart Day

Day 11:

We had a lot planned for today, but first wanted to head over to Killarney National Park to check out Torc Waterfall since we didn’t get stop on our first day when we did the Ring of Kerry. We headed to the car park at the first sign we saw and it was early so nobody was around to ask, we saw the stream flowing and producing a few rapids, but nothing to write home about. So we thought it was further up the road based on the information Danny had gotten on the internet. So we drove a bit up the road and saw another sign for the waterfall hike so we took the path. Unfortunately the signs were very poorly marked and we ended up walking all the way to Denis Cottage and the meeting of the waters. Definitely not what we had planned to do since it was a 6-7km hike round trip. Our plan was to check out the falls and be on the road for 20 minutes. It was very disappointing to hike that long and not get to the prize in the end. So we headed back to the car and got back on the road an hour and a half later than planned. We decided to stop in the original car park again because it said Torc Waterfall 200m, so Danny got out and ran up the hill and sure enough we should have known that the small rapids we saw were from something much larger up stream. Although our long hike was not intentional, it was a nice walk and we ended up getting to see what we wanted in the end, as well as a beautiful rainbow. Ended up being a better start to our day than we thought it was going to be.

Off to Curragh Plains we go, this was the battlefield where Braveheart had been filmed. We drove around for a bit before Danny and the boys ran up a large hill and took pictures of where we thought the battlefield had taken place. The plains are very large and I am sure have changed a bit since 1995, but it sure did look like the right place except that there were sheep EVERYWHERE, the boys had a bit of fun with them.

Trim Castle was the next stop. This was one of the primary filming locations for Braveheart including the part where William Wallace and his men sack the castle in York. It was also the location where they filmed the streets of London and the William Wallace execution scene at the end of the movie. The picture on the blog is of the main tower used in the movie and was the entrance they used when they sacked York. Danny talked to one of the employees there who showed him a book of pictures of them building the sets and then told him…”Yeah it was almost all Hollywood, they built it up so it looks a lot different”. But Danny (3rd person, lol) was still happy to get to be the same place where it was filmed.

Next we were off to Bective Abbey where a lot of the movie was also filmed. The outside of the Abbey was used as the setting for Edward the Longshanks castle. The inside of the Abbey was also used for the courtyard of Longshanks castle. And for those of you that have seen the movie you may remember the scene where the princess is walking through the beautiful courtyard with all those columns talking with her lady in waiting that was filmed here too (as you can see in the pictures). The Abbey was unfortunately locked up in a lot of places so Danny (again 3rd person, lol) had to do some climbing to get some of the pictures he wanted. Other things were filmed here too like the Dungeon where William Wallace was held while waiting to be executed and also the field where Wallace went to meet the Princess. Danny was really excited to get to see this site.

We finally made it back to Dublin where we checked into Premier Inn again and then rested for about an hour before heading out to dinner and walking around Phoenix Park. We found a spot to park close to the city center and were lucky enough not to have to pay since it was after 7pm. We walked around the main street for a bit before stopping for dinner at another local pub, Madigan’s. I had Irish bacon and mash, Ryan had the same, while Brayden enjoyed sausage and chips again, and Danny had Celtic stuffed chicken. This was not one of the better places we have eaten, but it was reasonably priced, so we didn’t complain much. After dinner we walked a bit more and passed a man on the phone, when I looked over he was almost falling over because he had fallen asleep while trying to call someone. Besides Danny’s salad incident that was one of the hardest times I have laughed on this trip. The girls in the pub were dying too. I couldn’t get my camera out fast enough before his body jerked and he woke up, lol. You really had to see it I guess to think it was funny.

Brayden was very tired from the day so him and I headed up to the room for shower and bed time while Ryan and Danny enjoyed some ice cream at the hotel. They soon joined us in the room as well and it was showers for all and then bedtime as we had another early wakeup to catch our plane back to Scotland in the morning.
